The Palace Ruins
Sans-Souci Palace
Sans-Souci Palace (french translation: without worries/without care) was the home of King Henri Christophe and his royal family. The palace is located closeby to the The Citadel, for more info, click here.
The palace was once very majestic in its time. The palace is located in Cap-Haitian. In the early colonial years Cap-Haitian was also dubbed Cap-Francais or The Paris of the Antilles, due the city's wealth and economic power. Sans-Souci was once tantamount to the Palace of Versailles, by Caribbean people. The palace once housed a printing shop, garment factory, chapel, barracks and a hospital.
It's said that in 1820, Henri Christophe suffered a stroke. Shortly after , insurrection broke out among the people and he subsequently took his own life by a silver bullet. Although, he died at the palace, his remains are entombed at the Citadel.
In 1842, a severe earthquake swept through the area and destroyed half of the population and critically damaged the palace. It was never rebuilt.
Even though the palace is in ruins, one can still visualize the illustriousness it once held.
